Beer kit enhancer and higher FG's

Post by bevanjon74 » Thu Oct 02, 2008 9:56 am

Hi all

Really quick question, I have a youngs definative lager kit in my Fv and have used 1kg of beer kit enhancer making up the kit rather than the sugar suggested..
the fermentation went off like a train at 20c and it has gone from 1040 OG to 1010 in about 3 days. It has now stayed at 1010 for the last two, with no sign of bubbles or activity ..
I read somewhere on here that using beer kit enhancers can give higher final gravity readings to kits - is this right? As the instructions show it should get to 1006 as the final gravity - but this is based on using all sugar.

So, in short my question is... has it finished? - or should I try and rouse the yeast and see if I can get it pushed to the 1006 suggested... or would this be flogging a dead horse because I have used enhancer and it won't get to the suggested FG?

Any advice would be appreciated.
Ta in advance

Id say you'd be ok to bottle, 1010 is good going using essentially 50/50 glucose and spraymalt. The spraymalt has a small percentage of unfermentable sugars and thus leaves more body in the pint (which is desireable imho).

if you want just to make sure its finished you could leave it a day longer, but id bottle if it were me.

hope this helps

Hi Chris
thanks for that, yeah I think I'll leave it to the weekend and then bottle it then.

1009/1010 is about as low as it will go with BKE.

So long as you have had a steady 1010 for a couple of days, it will have finished fermenting and you can safely bottle/keg it.
