Priming in the bucket - Coopers Aussie Lager

Post by irishmcbloke » Tue Oct 07, 2008 1:35 am

Hello folks. I have been reading through as many previous posts as possible but can't seem to find the answer to my specific question, so here goes.
I have a Coopers Aussie lager on the go which seems to be going to plan (my first ever beer brew!!) I am planning to prime in a secondary bucket and then bottle straight away. Almost every post I have read here recommends using 80-85g of sugar, heated and mixed into the brew. HOWEVER, the instructions with the kit say that if you are priming in the bottles you should use 8g per litre (they dont mention priming in a second bucket at all). As this is a 23 litre kit that means I should use around 185g of sugar. As this is a massive difference from the 80-85g most people on here recommend I thought I would check with anyone who has already made this. I know that the more sugar I add the more fizz I get but there must come a point when (a) it makes the beer ery sweet, and (b) you end up with 23 1L beer bombs

8g per litre is about right for lagers IMHO, you need plenty of carbonation. I add 4 tsp (16g) to a 2L PET bottle.

I should warn you that bottles primed at this level will need several hours in the fridge before opening... open one at room temperature and the bubbles will pull the sediment straight off the bottom.

Adding priming sugar will not affect the sweetness of the final beer, it is all fermented out into CO2 a little alcohol. Provided you are using PET bottles, or good heavy glass beer bottles, you won't have any danger of one going bang either. The main cause of bottle bombs is incomplete primary fermentation before bottling, so make 100% sure it's finished before you attempt to bottle.

I asked the same thing last week http://jimsbeerkit.co.uk/forum/viewtopi ... =4&t=16418 except I primed at 80g, bottled, THEN read the instructions
I've tried a couple and they're not enormously fizzy which is ok.

Cheers guys, very helpfull indeed. I suppose it just depends on taste, one mans too fizzy is another mans flat lol
I dont mind having them in the fridge for a few hours before opening as thats how I like my lager anyway, and as I have proper HB PET bottles and heavy thick swing top bottles I think they should be ok too. Think I'll go for the 184g as per kit instructions and I can always reduce for my next brew if too carbonated.
Thanks again for the helpfull replies :D

Im not quite as daring an opted for 160g for priming, if its too flat lesson learned an ill add more next time. now the hard part of leaving the stuff alone.
