woodfordes wherry
woodfordes wherry
my woodfordes wherry has been in my secondary fermenter for 8 days now just checked a reading and its now 1.010 will this get any lower and how long do I have to leave it before its ready to drink ?
Re: woodfordes wherry
That sounds about right for an all malt kit.
Check the gravity over the next 2 days to make sure it doesn't change, then you can be sure it's ready to bottle.

Re: woodfordes wherry
One suggestion for the next brew you do - try fermenting it in a fermentation vessel first and then kegging it. That way you can get the beer off of the yeast cake for its conditioning time

Re: woodfordes wherry
I’ve already done that, I used a primary fermentor for 10 days now its been in secondary fermentor for 8 days it now has a reading of 1.010 how long shall I leave it in the king keg before I can drink it ?
Re: woodfordes wherry
The longer the better really. I'd just go by your own taste buds. Pull a pint and see if you're happy with it.
It will definitely get better with age. If you can stomach it wait for four to six weeks and drink it then.

Re: woodfordes wherry
One other question - you say you're still taking hydrometer readings during secondary fermentation.
By secondary fermentation do you mean priming - i.e adding 80g - 100g of sugar after fermentation is finished to carbonate and condition?
If that is the stage you are calling secondary fermentation then your hydro reading is pretty meaningless. The gravity reading is really for telling when primary fermentation is complete (I.e two gravity readings the same over a two day period. The Final gravity (FG) reading you take then can be calculated with the opening gravity (OG) reading you took before pitching yeast into the wort to determine the ABV of the brew. The calcualtion also has an allowance for the addition of priming sugar as this will impact slghtly on the final ABV.
The other issue will be that the act of you taking a reading at the "secondary fermentation" stage - opening your king keg and putting a hydro in defeats the object of priming since you are releasing the pressurised CO2 you are trying to generate by opening the keg.
At least that's my understanding

Re: woodfordes wherry
Yes, as Marts says, there's no need to take gravity readings in the keg. Just wait at least 4 weeks after you put it in there and it shouldl be OK to drink, but will improve if you leave it longer (and you'll kick yourself if it justs starts tasting its best as you are pulling the last couple of pints!
)
