Munton's Montmellick Dublin Stout

Post by Curious Brew » Sun Oct 26, 2008 11:02 pm

Anyone brewed one of these before?

I got the kit for Christmas last year and have only just got round to making it up. It's best before next August so it should be okay and the yeast has been kept in the fridge.

Made up with 1Kg of Dark DME and an extra 100gms of glucose, came to a weirdly low 1.035. :?

No pics this time but I'll let you know how it comes out.

What a waste of DME! If I got that result, I'd sling it and save wasting energy and resources on it ~ especially as, being Muntons, it's liable to stick like STAB anyway.

OG might be a point or two higher to adjust for temperature. It was about 24 degrees C when I tested it.

Go your own way, CB. Just let us know how it turns out :)

I'll be curious to hear ~ because I'll sure as hell never be buying any to find out!

Actually, that was Seriously one of the first kits I looked at and decided; ' NO! ' Just one of those 'gut' things.

Still, ye were given it ~ in good faith, obviously ~ and now ye've given it a whirl. I'll be genuinely interested to hear ye final verdict. See if my instincts are any use

I might need to calibrate my hydrometer, my Cooper's Lager was allegedly 4.5% but I was getting muntered after two bottles...

The stout's had just shy of two weeks now so I thought it was about time I took a sample.

The hydrometer tells me it's 1.022 at 19 degrees which would make it about 2% alcohol by my calculations. :? Weird as it tastes lovely, not too sweet but obviously very "young" and I definitely got a little buzz off of the hydrometer sample... Lovely coffee and chocolate notes and I think it'll be gorgeous in a month's time.

I've added some yeast nutrient and moved it a bit closer to the radiator in the hope of getting it below 1.020.

Fingers crossed. [-o<

If that doesn't work I'll re-pitch.

Still at 1.022 after another couple of days.

Just pitched some Safale S04 and moved it a fraction closer to the radiator.

Calibrated the hydrometer and it's spot on. :?

 Muntons have obviously surpassed themselves!

Looks to me like I'd still have been quite content to have ditched it in the first place. You're a bit of a glutton for it, aren't ye, CB? I reckon their CEO must be a bit of a Temperance Society bod on the quiet, ye know? Trying to convert everyone to soft drinks, under the guise of beer.

But if the taste is good it'll make a cracking session beer will it not?

By the way it looks like my Wherry is stuck at 20 too, has been for three days now :( What shall I do with it?

The Safale has created a head of very fine bubbles on the surface. Something's getting turned into carbon dioxide... and alcohol. =D>

Three days have passed and it's down to 1.019, that's another three points in three days. :?

I just want the bloody thing to finish now so that I can put my Christmas Cooper's Lager on.

Twenty days and counting...

I've just done a muntons old conkerwood and am now worried............. [-o<
How do I know if all -is-not-well?
I'm guessing a good place to start would be to buy a hydrometer.....

Cheers Chris =D>
I did "start" the yeast and as we speak it is bubbling away very happily but I'll keep my eyes on it.
Can anyone recommend an "old peculiar" style kit which is easy enough for a numb-nuts like me to get good results from?
