Scammonden Dark (BruPak) ?

Post by Ditch » Wed Nov 05, 2008 4:32 am

:-k What ye reckon, gentlemen? Only Coopers Stout is bloody thin on the ground over here, just now. I'll ask my supplier to order me in a case but, meanwhile .....

This baby caught my eye. He has a few more of these available. But it'd be a bummer to grab four or five and then find it's not to my tastes.

Saying that, I probably get on with most " Dark " beers anyway. Anyone have an opinion of how this one might compare to say, Theakstons Old Pec'? I remember I used to enjoy that well enough. Actually enjoyed it more, in the end, mixed half and half with another ale. Buggered if I can remember what the other one was now though! ](*,)

Was it Ruddles County I used to mix it with ....? Over a decade ago now. And I was permanently pissed. Is it any wonder?!

Anyway; I'd be obliged for any opinions, please.

Cheers!

Have done a few Brupaks and all have been pretty bloody good. Am kegging the Almondbury Old this evening and am expecting great things from it. Haven't tried the Scammonden Dark but they reckon its good porter but they also do black moor stout which I have been thinking about doing.

We used to mix Old Pec with XB and call it standard I seem to remember but after a few I didn't remember too much! :D

Don't know if it's the power of suggestion but someone on the forum commented just as I was starting my Scammonden Dark that both he and his wife thought it tasted watery! Either I'm easily persuaded or they were right, the taster I had on checking the FG did feel watery, but I have bottled it and will leave it for a month before making a final assessment. Looked and smells like a nice one though - I will open the half bottle from the last of the racking to make sure as per my usual it's not off and is priming on Friday, I will tell you better then. FWIW OG 1.052 FG 1.016 my highest FG for any brew; brewed with 1kg BKE (and I primed with 1/2 tsp brewing sugar) Still gives 4.9 % which suits me.

4.9% ?! We think that'd about suite 'Ditch' too! Blimey! That's what I'd call a Pint Worth Drinking! (Ye'd sure as hell know ye'd had a few, eh?) Ok. BIG marks for that aspect.

Tastes watery: Fact vs Suggestion? Tough one. I suspect we're all probably more open to suggestion than we may like to conciously admit to ourselves. Saying that; I'd be deeply curious as to what ye mate used. I'm a DSM man myself and would never think to put BKE or sugar near my brews. I wonder ....?

What ever. I've read some great reviews of BruPak on here, in the past. Enough so that it's caught my eye and lodged. Now we have Smoggy singing their praises too? How many flys before we sample ...

Bummer is, their Stout simply isn't on offer to me here. But then, Coopers has so impressed me I wonder if Anything else could win me over?

Maybe a 'Home Brew Tasting' festival would be good, eh? Get to taste a drop of various different brews. Only, committing so much to five gallons of anything, just to see? Makes one want to tread carefully. But then, we all have our individual tastes and preferences ~ and I honestly wouldn't know a 'Hoppy' from a 'Malty' taste  I just know what hits the mark.

Talked myself round in bloody circles here, haven't I? I'll get a kit and try it! ;)

Cheers for the input, guys!

hi. we've just finished drinking our Scammonden Dark (bottled 500ml) & it was very good. it has converted me to porters. it did start off very watery but i have realised that this was because it was too cold, needs to be about 10-12c, & probably could have been left a little longer to condition. was watery @ 3 to 4 weeks & was drunk straight from coming in from the cold. definately worth a go. we have kept about 2 litres back to see how good it gets as it ages
