I've found these instructions for making up fixby gold which were posted on another forum:
gently boil the malt in 6L of water for 10 mins in a large pan on the stove then cool it in a sink of cold water.
Add this to the fermenter, top up to final vol then draw off 5L to boil the hops in for 10 mins. (obviously a tap on the fermenter helps here). Boiling hops in the wort improves flavour extraction.
Add this straight to the fermenter and as long as the temp is below 30, preferably 25 deg c, pitch the yeast. Snap the lid on and put the fermenter in a sink of cold water to cool if necessary, mind your back!
The only problem being that I dont have a large stock pot, the largest pan that I have holds just over 3l - will this still work with the reduced amount?

Re: Making up a fixby gold
Kev, most people don't bother boiling kits.
There are 2 reasons; firstly you need a big pot
but secondly because it can drive of hop aroma from the wort.
The whole idea of kits is to keep it simple, so why complicate things? Here's Chris's (Daab's) guide to making up a kit.
