Clumping Spray Malt

Post by Immy's Dad » Thu Nov 20, 2008 11:03 pm

Does anyone else find that when they add spray malt it clumps to a rock-hard consistency? I added 1.5 kg to a kit today and couldn't get all the lumps out, I'm hoping they still get munched by the yeasties but it made getting a gravity reading a waste of time.

Does anyone have any tips on how to avoid such issues? All advice would be welcomed. :)

I used spray malt for the first time last week and was fairly sure all was not well when it all clumped.
I just stirred like a big mad stirry person for a good half an hour and it all eventually dissolved.
No idea if there is an easy way around this problem so I too would appreciate any advice.

I always added Mine to about 4 litres of boiling water in a pan which was then added to the kit. Still clumped a little but dissolved pretty quickly though.

Yes, I used it for the first time recently and I thought I'd wrecked me brew. It went into really hard lumps - exactly as you describe - on contact with boiling water. Ten minutes of stirring saw it off though.

Mmmnnn Naked Maltesers..I love um.. I find if you put the dme into a sanitised jug and add little at a time to your brew and keep stirring it doesn’t clump as much and what is left in the jug that does clump, can be swilled out in the brew.
But I happen to like the taste of clumped dme and just eat the remaining clumps.

I think 1.5 kilo's is a bit much to add to a kit though

i normally stick a pan on the stove, rinse the can with a kettle full of water and stick this in the pan. Then i slowly add the spraymalt and stir, no problem.

you also benefit from getting all the goodness out of the can.

Ditto Chris, I do the exact same thing.

Maybe i'll try dissolving it in cold water though next time if that's what you reckon is better Chris-x1.

Ditto ditto.
I used to just chuck it into the fv, sometimes it was fine, others not, whether using hot or cold water. Last couple of times I've boiled it up slowly on the stove and had no problems. Far easier to keep stirring it when it's in a pan as opposed to the wide oceanic expanse of a bucket!
