Homebrew injury - D'oh

Post by drmick » Sun Nov 23, 2008 1:48 pm

Hi All

got the house to myself this morning so thought great opportunity to get the Cooper stout on the go. To prevent soaking the kitchen thought I would do the cleaning/sterilising in the bath. Filled my FV up with water added the sterilising powder put on the lid, and went to give it a bit of a shake - and buggered my back  . Having to bend over the edge of the bath obviously put the strain on my lower back and strained a muscle or two - no problems when I did all the cleaning last time in the kitchen so I must subconsciously lift properly when I have the space. But being a professional I soldiered on and got the kit in the FV - smells rather wonderful, hopefully it tastes as good when it comes to drinking it.

Hopefully back will improve by next weekend when I have to do the same on the keg to house the stout.

I guess its going to be an afternoon of lying on sofa with aspirin, sadly got no alcohol to drink its all in progress at the moment

So a warning to all on here lift with your legs not your back - I'm sure this is a rookie mistake though

Hope you're soon on the mend.

It's a danergous business, this homebrewing. I'm going to show this thread to my missus. You see, this is why I need a dedicated, ergonomically designed brewing space...

I'm sorry I just burst out laughing when I read that! But ye'll never believe this .....

Today, as every day, I was sorting my Dogs out and went to get " Rats ", my little terrier, off her chain. As ever, she writhes and twists and so half strangles herself whilst making it awkward for me to unhitch her.

I was just muttering my customary, " Why do you wriggle so much, Rats? ". When Bang! F*cking back went! I'm Not kidding!

Fortunately, my mate was due round in minutes. So I had him exercise my Rottie. No Way could I handle Chain Dog! Unfortunately, poor Dean O's round here in his professional capacity; To install my new wood stove! And That little beauty weighs a bloody ton!

So, there's you with yours. Me sat here wincing with mine (Gets ye right in the nuts too, doesn't it!) I just hope Dean doesn't end up flat out on my living room floor by the time he's finished with that stove!

Look on the bright side, ye lucky bugger: At least You got ye Coopers in! #-o

They're a funny thing, backs, got to be really careful and once you start getting bad backs it can be a lifelong problem after that.

Sorry for the both of you, I guess that puts a mockers on the brewing Ditch? #-o

I'm glad I'm not the only one suffering Ditch, hope yours isn't too bad, I would hate to thing of all those stout kits sitting not being made.

I had to get the kit started otherwise I would have been in pain the nothing, some things are worth going through the pain for - hopefully it will live up to Ditch's recommendations.

Think I might have to have some medicinal Whisky tonight :D and see if that works, the painkillers I took earlier don't seem to be working.

My back went a few weeks back whilst pulling my chair closer to my desk at work. It played up the old sciatica problem and I needed a couple of days off. The following weekend, a friend was round, so, thinking he could help if I got into trouble, I took the opportunity to bring a full King Keg downstairs (from the computer room which doubles as a brewing room) and put it into the outhouse. Not only did I managed it without problem, but it improved my sciatica massively!

So brewing is good for the health but work is not

Too true! You could open a clinic to treat fellow back pain suffers, you'll just need to have a full Keg needing bringing downstairs for each customer

Halfway down a pint of cider, and remarkably the back is feeling a bit better. Sadly I only have one pint of it :( . Might have to take a pint or two of the Wherry out of the keg, not quite ready to drink yet but it is alcohol/medicine

I think a day off work tomorrow is called for

Might sound stupid but try hanging by your arms from the stairs or a beam or something. Worst case scenario is you have a slightly prolapsed disc (trust me you wouldnb't be typing on a computer if it was fully prolapsed). More likely a muscle strain but the problem is when you strain a muscle it tightens which can exert a "pulling" force on the vertebrae it is attached to .....which......can cause the discs inbetween the vertebrae to prolapse #-o
Stretch the spine, gravity is a great cure for bad backs.
I'll put the soapbox away now..........

drmick, once upon a time the fishermens wives would carry their men through the waves to their boats, and on returning from a long days fishing, carry them back to shore.
remind the wife of this, pointing to your fv. if she refuses, say to her you`ll carry the fv, but she`ll be carrying the both of you.
and theres always the shed to sleep in and the top shelf of the newsagents.
