Help with werry Kit

Post by ians2 » Sun Nov 30, 2008 1:12 pm

My woodfordes werry kit has not started fermenting? 48hrs after pitching yeast. Any suggestions, I have another pack of yeast and can add that but will this cause a problem...

Any help appreciated.

No Ian,get your spare yeast in ASAP as your wort is vulnerable to infection until fermentation starts.

What is the room temperature where your brew is? If it is too cold, this is possibly why it has not started fermenting yet. Aim for 18c-22c.

I have had the same problem, the yeast just sits at the top, its been three days now, so i will also try to get it going with some more yeast.
I was trying woodforde nog.

A useful exercise is to rehydrate the yeast before pitching. For the uninitiated you place the yeast in some cooled, pre-boiled water; 1/3rd of a cup is fine, then cover with cling film and leave it for 30mins or so whilst you get on with the rest of the prep work. You should end up with a nice cup of foamed up yeast. There are advantages to doing this, but one of the main ones is that you can see if your yeast is viable before you pitch it. If nothing happens and the yeast just sinks to the bottom of the cup, then prepare another yeast (assuming you have one of course!). That way you should avoid the problems you've described and won't have to pitch another yeast on top of a 'dead' one with all the infection risks that kenny850 discusses.

If I had to guess I'd say it was probably the warmer temperature which did it but you may well have had some duff yeast. It never hurts to have a few spare sachets around - keep them cool or even frozen.

My advice is, buy loads of sachets of 04 from http://www.simplynatural.org.uk free postage and reasonable price.

I plan to keep a large stockpile of these of these and use instead of kit yeasts.
