cheers dave, my thoughts too

but i wondered about the snap off ring that breaks when you first undo a bottle?
does it serve any other purpose than to let you know that it hasnt been tampered with?

No other purpose whatsoever.

I re-use plastic PET bottle tops again and again... and again... and again... After a dozen or so uses, you might find one or two that don't seal, so I try to replace the caps (infact the whole bottles) bottle before that. Clean them after you open the bottle, leave to dry, they should then be ready to sterilise for the next brew. Any that look soiled can be discarded, or scrubbed with a brush and hot water.
