Finally got the kit from Leyland and the Muntons kit I also mentioned in an earlier post. Now get ready for a barrage of questions!

One question I have is this: Is the yeast in the Muntons pack inside one of the tins? I can't tell from the outside what is in each. All it says it to put the tins in warm water before hand.

Second, a sterilising question. With the Leyland kit came enough sterilising solution powder to clean 40 gallons. My question is about quantity to make. As the fermenting bin is 40 pints, and the barrel is the same, is this 'Bruclens' powder going to be enough for both?

The instructions on the Bruclens says to use one teaspoonful per gallon; can I just make up a gallon and swill it around the bin and the barrel etc?

What about the siphon equipment? Do I have to sterilise that separately?

Finally, thermometers... how big should it be? Big enough to reach into the bottom of the fermenting bin? That would be about 18". Is such a thing available?

Sorry for n00b questions.

Oh dear, maybe something's gone wrong with the Leyland delivery. Here's a picture of what's int he Munton's box. As you can see: two tins of something - malt I guess.

Now, I bought the Muntons as I believe it would be a 'better' one that that delivered in the kit of bin and barrel etc. Here's a photo of the standard tin that came with the bin and barrel:

As you can see, there is a lid to this one tin, some instructions, a disc of cardboard and a small packet of yeast.

Assuming there is no yeast in the tins sent to me (could the yeast be inside the tins?), could i use this little packet from the single tin in the two tins from Munton?

Daab, thanks for the reply, I have noted your suggestions.

:) (sort of)

I'll ring 'em tomorrow. Either the yeast was never there, or it's in one of the tins.

It won't be in the tins tb, they're full of extract.

I always check when I go into my LHB shop for yeast and instructions in kits as they easily fall out when people are nosying

LHB should have checked yours b4 posting!

Funny you say that, as the hygrometers plastic bag was torn, and I could see fingerprints on the thing itself.

you'd be fine using the sachet from the other kit
best of luck - after the first brew things get a lot easier.

Rang them this afternoon, and no problem with sending a replacement packet of yeast.

Be interesting to see how it compares (in size) to the 'other' packet.

Hey! By Saturday or, OMG!, Monday night, I might be cooking something. Be ready for early December.

Yum!

Most yeast sachets from kits contain 6 grams,i tend to buy a safale-04 dried yeast which is an 11 gram sachet for a quid! Nearly 2 x the yeast to do the hard graft :D

TB make sure its not drunk by early december

Finally got around to mkaing the brew this afternoon...

I put the malt into the fermenting bin, after sterilising it (the bin), followed by 3.5l of boiling water, mixing well, then adding the required 16.5l of cold water, and again stirring vey well.

This followed by adding the yeast, straight from the packet, it said not to re-constitute it, and mixing that in really well.

So the question arose - why add 3.5l of boiling water and then 16.5l of cold water, as this comes to 20l, not 23l, as I thought it was meant to be?

Anyone know? Could it be that the malt accounts for three litres of the total volume?

Thakns if anyone can shed any light on this question.

:)
