coopers stout tips please

Post by THE EMBALMER » Sat Dec 20, 2008 6:15 pm

hi all been reading previous posts regarding brewing coopers stout so i purchased a can today.
i have bought 500g of dark spray malt not realising i need 1kg #-o
and some glucose but i read this is not good for stout, would it be ok for priming?
i am waiting for submersible heater to come from eblag but could carry on with out but i may need to be patient and brew this right.
shall i get some more spray malt or add sugar half and half?
is glucose a no no for stout?
what are the time scales for brew time to bottling/barreling time ect?
so many questions....so little time ha .
cheers for help in advance cant wait to get it under way but i dont want to spoil the ship for an apeth of tar!! cheers glyn

I made mine with 1Kg of Dark spraymalt and it tasts gooood.

It was fast too, I left it in the FV for 9 days but it was ready for the corney after 5 really.

(I had a fishtank heater in so that probly helped)

Please, Embalmer, what ever ye do; Use Spray Malt. You're looking at tasting Coopers Stout for the first time? Then Nothing must be allowed to undermine that experience.

{Hells shit! :shock: This is just getting ridiculous! <--- Brain storm moment. To be explained}

Searching for a way of expressing myself there, I thought of the first time I ever kissed a girl. She'd actually just ~ whether by accident or design, I'll never know ~ been eating a hard boiled, sugary sweet. Thus the taste of her mouth was something I'll never forget and will likely never again experience. As should be ye Properly Made Coopers Stout. What if that girl had been eating onions?

Hold back. It's Worth It! Get the other 500g of DSM. (I personally use Medium, but I have a load of Dark to try too. Who knows? )

Now, sorry about that brain storm. I was remembering that first, sweet kiss. Decades and decades ago.

Her name was Patricia Cooper!!!!! I swear to god, I shit ye not! On my Dogs lives! (Ok; Altogether now: Twilight Zone Music!

I can quite believe I have strolled into the Twilight Zone! Nothing would surprise me here

p.s. I remember my first proper full on snog with tongues, she smelt of fags, as she had started smoking that day [-X

holy moly! what have i stirred up in your loins old lad? ,i remember some thing similar after the young girl in question had eaten an apple mmmm happy days! i think a hay stack was the place it got a bit fruity ....as in apple..i will stop now!

regards the spray malt i will get another 500g ,i am waiting for my submersible heater any way. i was wanting to set it away before going up to cumbria for xmas .as the heating will be switched off the heater should keep it nice and warm.
i could get some medium and keep the dark for priming duties or go half dark half medium, which ever i want to be tasting what you have been tasting

to bottle or to keg is the question a matter of preference and ease of use i guess? i might get some small kegs and bottle some to give to friends and keep keg for my own umbrication .
thanks ditch for your brain storming and tips you are the zen master of coopers stouting.
will try and get to brew shop on the morrow but alas i am slaving but an early dart is on the cards and our lass has ear marked me for a trip to the tip..oh what joy.
cheers brewsters glyn :)

Having read all about the joy and wonder that is Coopers Stout, I now want some of the action for myself!!

I just have a quick question. Unfortunately I don't have anywhere in the house warm enough to brew this where I can risk the infamous overspill. Then I noticed that my LHBS does 33L and 60L bins. Which do people reckon would be big enough to tame the beast? :D

Thanks,

Matt

my heater has turned up today yeeha!!got it on test with fv full of water, hopefully get some more spray malt tomorrow if time permits .
the big fv sounds like a good idea matt, 33l sounds big enough.
heating wise i have gone for fish tank heater should be quite economical and stable as you dont want dead fishies if thats what its intended use was . 8)

I have my first Coopers Stout now in the keg. Sneaky samping indicates a good result but trying to hold back until Christmas Day! I used a 33 l FV with a submersible heater. It tried to escape but didn't quite reach the lid so you should be fine with a 33 litre job!

I started a coopers stout, made with a kg of dark spray malt (muntons) and 1/2 tsp of yeast vit, on the 7th of jan. It was fermenting nicely with loads of froth. When I checked it on yesterday there was no froth and the gravity was 1016. I checked again today and it's still 1016.

Should I give it a stir and maybe add some more yeast vit or just leave it a bit longer? Having read Ditch raving about it I want it to be as good as possible. It was made with safale 04 and was a bit warm when I pitched but has been a fairly constant 18 - 20 c since then. Any advice would be most welcome.

Operator wrote: 1/2 tsp of yeast vit,

Sounds like that's ye problem. Right there. See?

The yeast supplied with ye Coopers kit is famously good stuff. It works great with that kit, as is. In fact, it works So well, results can be 'Fun'. Now ye've souped up a super charged yeast ......

This is why I firmly believe we should Always follow the manufacturers instructions, at least for the first go or three. See what it's supposed to be like. Then we can play around, if we wish.

DSM instead of sugars is the only thing that 'needs' changing from the off.
