Evening all,
I've read the bottling faq, and a few threads regarding bottling but still feel unsure about which bottles to use to bottle my brewferm abdij tommorow.
I've got 9l to accomodate, and have quite a few Erdinger dark's and wheat beers to use, but given they're 500ml each - i really wanted to fill some smaller bottles aswell.
A recent xmas present was a crate of 284ml stella bottles, does anyone have any bad experiences using these bottles? Are they strong enough for secondary fermentation, or should i just stick with the brown ones?
many thanks in advance,
James
Suitable bottles?
Re: Suitable bottles?
For the wifes lager i use allsorts of green bottles Stella, Carlsburg, etc etc, and touch wood as yet none have ever blown.
But if they are strong enough for lager then i figured they would be ok for homebrew lager, never tried any real ales in them
though as i use Magners bottles for my own stuff, just make sure there isn`t alot of fermentaion going to happen in the bottles
or you could be in trouble.
I usually add 1/4 teaspoon of priming sugar to the small lager bottles, but thats when fermentaion as fully stopped and the
hydrometer is reading at the "Bottle" indicator, so wouldn`t like to add too much if its still fermenting or you`ll be recreating
the big bang better than in Switzerland.

Re: Suitable bottles?
I use all sorts of bottles - only once had a problem:
I use a cheapo capper that you hit with a mallet. One bottle broke as I was bottling - good job I was doing it outdoors !
The bottle that broke was a strong thick real ale bottle, so you just can't tell.
The thin weedy looking bottles all went fine.
Agree that 500ml is too much all at once.
