Coopers Stout Eruption

Post by mutleysfriend » Mon Dec 29, 2008 10:48 pm

Having read the rave review on here about Coopers Stout I thought I'd give it a go.
I made a brew yesterday afternoon. I had read that it can be quite lively so for safety's sake placed the fermenting bucket in a plastic container to catch any overflow.
By the time I was ready for bed it was fermenting well and looked like this:

When my Wife returned with our morning cup of tea in bed I asked if all was well with the brew, she said she didn't notice anything was wrong but wasn't really looking.
I then went downstairs and was faced with this  :

Having cleared up the mess and wiped the wall down, I found the top of the fermentation trap, it seems to have been blown right off and splashes of beer were at least 4 feet up the wall!!
Beware this is lively stuff. :)

I wonder what would cause more chaos with the wife, getting caught with Gillian Taylforth or covering the house in erupting Coopers?

Mine's nearly ready to go... Now that would be an experiment!

If I may drag the topic back to Coopers for a brief moment; MF, did you use the Coopers kit supplied yeast?

Yes, I used the supplied yeast and added 1Kg of dark DME. My house is quite cold especially at night so the fv sits on a heat pad, the temperature is somewhere near 24c.

Cheers MF. It's interesting that, as far as I can gather, most Coppers 'users' seem to pitch the kit yeast, with what can best be described as 'volcanic' results. My query was generated by a plan to take a standard kit and adapt it with additional DME/LME, grains and hops. I got a Coopers Draught (it was available), but in most of my earlier kits (none of them Cooopers so far) I've replaced the kit yeast with an S-04. However, frankly what I've read (and seen!) leads me to feel that with Coopers at least, there's little point!

I might be wrong but I think that darker brews tend to throw up more of a yeast head!
