Sugar For Kits

Post by BWT » Fri Jan 09, 2009 10:10 pm

Good Evening Folks
I have a couple of questions on the additions of fermentable sugars these are
1)Spray Malt what amount is used to replace "sugar"
2) Beer Kit Enhancer same questions above
3) Dry Malt Extract is this the same as Spray Malt? If not can it be used in place of sugar?
4) Liquid Malt Extract can this be used in place of "Sugar"? If so what amount replaces the sugar
The kit i have suggests 1Kg of white or brewing sugar can some please quantify using the above ingredients or should i stick to plain sugar bearing in mind i really like Malty beers

1. 1 kg sugar = 1 kg spraymalt
2. 1 kg = 1 kg. Beer enhancer is just a mix of spraymalt and sugar.
3. Yes.
4. Yes but spraymalt is easier.

If you really like malty beers then there's one solution: use all malt. Costs a bit more but it's worth it.

Spraymalt is not as fermentable as sugar therfore if you substitute 1kg of sugar with 1kg of spraymalt you will get a lower ABV% but a much better bodied and richer beer. If you want the higher ABV% use 1.5KG spraymalt or a spraymalt/glucose mix (BKE=beer enhancer). Liquid malt extract (LME) needs a higher amount again but I'm unsure the exact comparison.

1kg sugar does NOT = 1 kg Beer enhancer in terms of ABV% but will make a much better brew.

Personally I would recommend you make your own BKE with 1 KG spraymalt and 250g Brewing suger unless using a Coopers kit in which case use 100% spraymalt (1.5KG).

Fristly can i thank you all for your comments which are very much appreciated. Can i now go on and ask for some more help. I have just made up a Coopers Real ale kit before reading these comments (30minutes ago) using 1Kg Ritchies BKE giving SG1.044 now after reading this i am wondering should i mix in another0.5kg of spraymalt or leave well alone. I personally couldn't care less about producing strong beer much prefer the taste and be able to stand after consuming a few pints
As always all comments very welcome
