Post by beerstupot » Mon Jan 12, 2009 9:04 pm

hi all i have just noticed ive got a fracture in my pressure barrel
it is a coopers larger kit and has been in there for 2-3 weeks. is there anything i can do to save it ?
although flat at the moment it seems fine but if i put any gas in to add fizz it leaks out through fracture
could i transfer it to a new one?

Get some pvc pipe to fit ye tap. Run that pipe right down to the bottom of the fresh keg. 'Pour' it into the fresh keg. (It goes without saying that everything must be cleaned and sanitised). Idea is to stop excess air exposure during the process. Then give it a burst of CO2 and dispose of that worthless keg.

Failing that, grab a handy soldering iron and weld the plastic shut. I would only do it this one time to avoid the possability of oxidising your beer, once you've drank it bin the keg.

Could the fumes from the plastic on the soldering iron taint the beer though?

I suppose it could, but by the sounds of it the crack isn't so bad as to let any fumes through. I guess you would need to just heat the plastic 'till it start to melt but not start smoking.
