Heron Bay Summer Mist - have to use glass carbouy?

Post by RatboyOllie » Sun Jan 25, 2009 6:27 pm

How do !

havent set it off going yet but.... the instructions in my Heron Bay Blackcurrant Merlot kit state that when it comes to racking it off into a secondary that this should be a glass carbouy. It says that because its a fruit wine and not a normal wine that the flavour will be left behind on a normal plastic fv and itll tarnish it for good. Can anyone confirm this is correct or whether its just the manufacturer covering their backs?

Bit of a pain in the asse if its right coz i dont have a 5 gallon glass carbouy, im a plastic fermenter kinda fella? Surely a really good scrub afterwards with soda crystals and then a hammering with some VWP will sort it............?

Anyone done one of these before?

Cheers

Ollie

Sounds like a load of crap to me! I have not made the Heron Bay kits myself, but I have made the Selection wines in these fermenters & I can assure you that I have never had one tarnished in any way!

To further reassure you, click here to see Garth's review on one of my wines.

Cheers Hillbilly i figured as much but thought I would ask coz if its going to riun an fv then i may as well put the money towards a glass carbouy than have to go and buy another fv straight after?!

Strange isnt it..........

i will set it going and should my fv become ruined i will report back !

cheers for response, Ollie

p.s your wine looks and sounds amazing, was it a kit and if so, which one, i will try it ! Not sure i will manage to hide some away for a year though....... ya never know though !

Niagara mist have exactly the same warning on the black cherry wine I made from them.
I used one of my plastic beer FV,s and I have made lager in it since with no aftertaste left from the wine at all.

I think they are just being overly carefull to cover themselves.

ah right, yeah i am indeed ! its bubbling away nicely. Been in there about 4 weeks i think but reading around on here reckon it could be anything up to a year...

Not in a rush for that one, got plenty of other things i want to drink and try. You walk into the homebrew store and look at all the options and its like bein a kid all over again visitin a sweet shop, sooooooo many options and not enough fv's !!!
