First Time Brew

Post by Aberdeenbrewer » Mon Jan 26, 2009 11:20 pm

Hi Folks

Expecting my new equipment to be delivered tomorrow with a Young's Lager kit.

As the missus thinks I am wasting my time and will just make a lot of mess/smell I am banished to the shed!!

I am concerned about the temp for fermentation. I have bought a 25w thermostaic aquarium heater and will wrap bin in as mch cladding as I can find.

Should i be concerned or will the kit come with a Lager yeast which will respond better to the cooler temps??

I can't afford to spend anything else just now so need to make do with what I have.

Any tips would be appreciated!

Thanks

I'm guessing from your online name that you are in Aberdeen? My guess is that:

Aberdeen in February + Garden Shed + aquarium type heater - cladding = reasonable temperature for your lager which I am guessing will be 12 - 15C (others more knowledgeable will advise if this is the correct temperature).

I'd say go for it without the cladding on your FV and check the temperature on a cold night and a warm day to see how close you are to the ideal and insulate/switch off heater accordingly.

Good luck and tell the missus that a kit really won't smell much at all - HONEST!

I was banished some time ago and there is nothing wrong with a shed ! Mine now has electric and plumbing, music and coffee (for early starts) for my next upgrade I am thinking of decking the inside to keep my feet dry !

Don't expect to get it right first time, stick with it and you will succeed, although it is easier to make real ale. Not a problem for me as I don't do lager.

Good Luck and happy brewing
