Altering a Coopers IPA kit. Advice please!

Post by FiercelyFuzzy » Fri Jan 30, 2009 11:49 am

Hi Guys

I was wondering if someone could give me some advice on altering the Coopers IPA kit.

I was hoping to bump up the alcohol to around 6% ABV (hopefully like Marstons Strong IPA). I'll also be boiling some extra hops & dry hopping but I'd thought I'd get the alcohol sorted out first!

On the Cooper website it recommends cutting the brew to 20 litres & adding 1kg light DME & 500g glucose. I think this would work out at an OG of 1048 (the kit is 1.7kg). I'm not sure would the FG would be, but I'm assuming 1010, so that'd give 4.9%?

How about if I cut the volume to 18litres, and used 1.5kg light DME and 1kg glucose? (OG 1059?) I'd be pitching 2 packs of yeast to cover it. Would it be minging?

Many Thanks!

FF

For my John Bull masterclass IPA i used a kilo of brewing sugar, to an already 3KG kit.
I think cutting down to 20 litres and adding 1kg light DME & 500g of sugar would be plenty, i'd have thought that'd easily get you to around 7%
Although the FG will slightly higher due to the DME.

My third Coopers IPA is my best yet. I added 1 kg LDME, 300 grams medium DME and I think 200 grams of brewing sugar. I made it up to 20.5 litres, as I do all my kits now, the.5 of a litre is for gravity readings.
I went with 2 packs of Nottingham yeast,, which I think is underrated, and had the best ferment ever, very lively for 3 days and trying to push the lid off the FV. After 4 days I dry hopped with 12 grams of Goldings, probably add 20 grams next time.
OG was 1050, it finished at 1011 so gives around 5.2 abv. If you allow another 0.2 for the brewing sugar for conditioning it leaves a pretty tasty 5.4 abv. Its really nice but next time I`ll up the Goldings and probably go with another hop addition for aroma. Very good kit in my opinion.
