small bottles taste better

Post by Portisheaddan » Mon Feb 02, 2009 10:34 pm

Good evening .....
I have been brewing my own larger. I use 2 size botles just because thats what I have. I find the littler bottles taste nicer and have much more fizz & head.
I put the right priming sugar in the 750 bottles but guess the 500ml bottles. Does more sugar make them taste better? Maybe im putting more sugar in the little bottles????

More sugar will result in more carbonation but you do run the risk of creating cute little bottle bombs

I've never brewed lager, but use a mix of pint Magners/Bulmers bottles, 500ml ale bottles and 450ml (I think) Grolsch swingtop bottles for my bitters and find it easier to put all the priming sugar in a second fementer and then syphon the beer onto it, stirring gently with a spoon until the sugar has disolved and then syphon into bottles.

It's probably more work in the long run, but you don't have to guess how much sugar to put in odd size bottles. If you consider you need to sanitise syphon tubing, teaspoon, funnel, thermometer, hydrometer and up to forty bottles, you might as well fill a second fermenter with sanitiser and get a fair few bottles in it as well as all your kit.

i find it a lot easier to do it using a second bucket to prime in and actually less work than messing around trying to get the sugar into the bottles, particularly as i used spraymalt which goes instantly sticky if there is too much moisture around. a lot of my first batch turned out far too fizzy whereas using a second bucket with a tap on it gives a much better and more even level of carbonation.

For lager's, the carb drops from coopers work a treat and are easy enough to drop into the bottles. For ale's I'd defo go for the 2ndry FV option and rack from there. Far far far easier!
