hi all
anyone know whether using a light bulb to heat my brewing cupboard will have any effect on the brew in my fv?
its a white plastic coopers kit screwtop type barrel.
ive also got my coopers bitter in brown glass bottles in there but thought theyd be safe.
effect of light...
Re: effect of light...
Shouldn't be a problem, lightstrike is caused by the action of UV light on hop compounds. A normal bulb doesn't produce this wavelength (fluorescent and new energy saving ones do though AFAIK).
Also it doesn't seem to be much of a problem with kit brews as the manufacturers seem to use a chemically modified form of the hop compounds which doesn't react to light strike, so more of a problem only if you move up to extract or all grain where whole/pellet hops are boiled in the wort.

I have the same barrel and use a light bulb in a fridge. I have never experienced any problems.brysie wrote:hi all

You need UV light to promote the skunking of beer. An incandescent light bulb is unlikely to emit that in particularly significant quantities.
