Beer Kit Enhancer - someone put me right please?

Post by RatboyOllie » Tue Feb 17, 2009 6:43 pm

Right ive read on numerous posts on here now that Beer Kit Enhancer (BKE) is just 50% Dry Malt Extract (DME) and 50% brewing sugar.

BKE is £4 for a kilo. So 50% of that kilo is DME, which means your DME is £2 for 500g.

DME to buy separately is £4 for 500g

Why on earth am I buying my DME seperately when I could just be adding BKE and saving money?! There is bound to be a reason it costs more, isnt there...............?

Im completely baffled and lost and havent been doing this long enough to even pretend that I know what I am talking about ! :? :?

Someone please help me !!!

Cheers in advance !

Could be as high as 2/3rds DME, so even better value and you could separate it.
I brew therefore I ... I .... forget

depends who you listen to. some on the forum have said its 25% DME. still good for a session/staple brew. but for something special spend the extra de niro

Ive not seen bke for £4.00 more like £5.00 in my brew shop.Dme is £6.50 per kg and brew sugar £1.50 so 500 g of each would cost me £4.00.Thats what Ive got in me Geordie bitter in the fv. =P~

Agreed - I used to get the Geordie BKE in Wilko for £3.25/kg - the robbing buggers have shoved it straight up to £4.99......

for a 'stock bitter' I find BKE is just fine, but I always make up 1-can kits to 4galls rather than the recipe figure of 5galls; I found even using 1kg spraymalt that these kits can be a bit think, weak and watery if made up to the full volume.
