old fridges

hi all

this lagering thing...
ive had a thermometer in me fridge today on the lowest setting and its around 7-8 degrees. now thats at the lower end of the scale for proper lager yeasts i know, but i wondered if an old nackered less efficient fridge would be any good for this purpose. or can you get/alter a fridge so it can hold temperatures needed for lager brewing?

i found a thread on here the other day about this but damned if i cant find it now.

All depends on the yeast used. Some go as low as 1 or 2 degree's (I've heard).

There are chaps who have *englarged* their fridges/freezers with boxes the push up to where the door would be; and then "lager" in that.

It's possible to fit a modified thermostat to a fridge to allow it to run at a higher temperature. There are a few threads on here about how to do that if you do a search.

Another alternative is to use an external aquarium temperature controller such as an ATC800. This can be connected into the mains supply of the fridge and the internal thermostat just turned up full.
