Ditch's Stout - to prime or not to prime?

Post by tartan wallet » Fri Feb 27, 2009 7:47 pm

Evening all

My first ever Coopers Stout brew has been 6 days in the FV and my hydrometer is telling me it's time to siphon into my Young's 5 gallon pressure barrell! (By the way, I tasted the brew I'd taken out of the FV and decanted into a trial jar and boy oh boy it tastes GOOD!!!! - Forgive my enthusiasm, this is my first brew since the 1980's and that was undrinkable lager!)
Can I ask you guys - should I prime my barrell with sugar before I transfer or should I simply fire a few blasts of CO2 into it from time to time via the gas canister?
Any other tips - I'm planning on siphoning on Sunday? [-o<

thanks a lot

It's partly down to personal taste and partly down to what keg you use. Ditch (the stout master :D ) does not prime, I belive he uses bottom tap barrels so pressure is not as much of an issue. I use a king keg top tap and prime with 80g of glucose then top up the co2 when it stops dispensing. Tastes great to me. Hope this helps.

Thanks for your really quick reply, operator, which is a great help.
My barrell has a bottom tap so I'm thinking I won't prime but throw a squirt of co2 into it if required

cheers :D

Good idea, then when you have finished the barrel in a week or two :=P you can brew another batch and try it primed and see which you prefer. Either way you win!
