Edme Irish stout

Post by rollin danny » Sat Feb 28, 2009 8:28 pm

Just finished the last of my Edme stout. It really improved with age.I bottled it on Christmas eve using 1 kg extra dark malt extract.Lovely pint ,black as a gorillas gouhlies in fact if you put a stong light behind it ,it would not penetrate it.The head was a huge' thick and creamy caramel colour.Definetly recomend it to try.£9.99 from wilko and its a 1.8 kilo kit which is a bit more than the Coopers kit [which is also lovely] at 1.7 kilo.Malt was £6.50 and water £2.00 .I also used saf-04 just to be safe and it finished at 1.014. =D> Great ale for less than 50p a pint

i have recently done the same kit, at the 24pint ratio without any extras, will be interesting seeing how it turns out, would be interesting doing a taste test

I also like the EDME stout. The price is right and even with 1k of beer enhancer (also from wilkos) it works out pretty cheap. I like to keg my beers but I have done some of the EDME in bottles and they have turned out a nice pint - I actually just bottled 40 pints on Saturday.
Last time I made it it was drinkable after about three weeks. I also added 200g of brown muscovado sugar to my last brew and still only hit the OG of 1.040. It did ferment down to 1.010 though. I also prime using the muscovado with about half a teaspoon.
I should try and get hold of a Coopers Stout for comparison but there is no where to get one locally and I don't want to pay internet delivery charges. Judging by the number of posts on the forum the Coopers is the popular choice.

I just popped an EDME Irish Stout in the FV yesterday. Made with 1kg enhancer (from wilkos) + 200g brewing sugar made to 20l gave an OG of 1.045 (which is what I was aiming for). So if it goes to 1.010 will be about 4.5%. Went off really well last night and is now calming down.

just about to give this stout a go - using roughly a kilo of MDME and up to 20 litres in length

This is a lovely stout but I think the name is somewhat misleading. None of the usual suspects - Guinness, Murphys and Beamish - have anything like the body and depth of flavour of this brew. On a related issue, if ever you go to West Wales, try Felinfoel Stout from Llanelli. Highly recommended.

Have tried this kit in 3 differing forms. The best was the shortest suggested as a Barley Wine ending up at incredibly dizzy-making! The stout (made to 32 pint) I found very burnt. To 40 pint it was okay I guess but I prefer the Muntons Conn Imp Stout. Can't recommend the Barley Wine version of this enough though. As long as you drink through the head. Don't be tempted to taste it.
Drinking: Turbo Cider, Black Rain Stout, Jotun Killer Double Stout, Apple Wine, AG#1 F.A.G,
Fermenting: Bramble Wine
Conditioning: Blueberry Jam Mead, Gales Mead, HLM EPIC FORCE Methegln, Tropical Juice TC on an orange mead slurry, AG#2 S.L.A.G.
Waiting for Space: Muntons Conn: Bock

Hi Flourpower, is that the Muntons Connoisseurs Range Export Stout? I've a tin of it right in front of me now to be brewed in a month or so. Only made it once but was very impressed. It has a lighter body than the Edme Stout but still a great pint. Shame I've left it too late for St Patrick's Day.

Rollin Danny - on the commercial front, try Dorothy Goodbodys Stout from the Wye Valley Brewery in Hereford. It's a magnificent bottled-conditioned real ale. Haven't seen Marstons Oyster Stout for years. I used to really rate that.

Unleashed my first bottle of this Edme irish stout last night (made to 35 pints using beer kit enhancer ) and primed with muscavado sugar.

its only been bottled for a week.

Absolutely gorgeous. have to pour it quick to get the guinness type head but what a gorgeous pint.

if Ditch's stout tastes half as good then im in for a treat with my next brew.

I dont know if youve got a Netto store near you but I was in my local a couple of weeks ago and they had Marstons oyster stout in for £1.05 a bottle. Anyway I resisted the temptation to buy some. After all why would I when I can make my own for less than 50p per pint. :D
