I have a Woodfords nelsons revenge brewed with an extra 1lb spray malt, it is 6.5 % and has been in pressure barrel for 2 weeks, it tastes superb and O am having to hold myself back from quaffing now, is 2 weeks far to early.

At 6.5% I would definitely say to leave it for longer, but if is tastes great then I guess theres no harm in drinking it now. I usually do the same but by the time you get to the end of the barrel and it has aged well, you regret not leaving it.

I have found the opposite, I usually start it after about 4 weeks and it seems to go downhill when I get to the last few pints about 8 weeks.

Many times in the past I've started drinking a brew early only to find that it improves beyond recognition - the only trouble is by then there's only about a gallon left!

Obviously, if you leave it for months and months, it will eventually go off, but a well made beer should last a long time.
