Stout kit

Im looking to do a stout kit, something along the lines of guinness as thats what i like (only tried a few stouts and some were overpowering). Any recommendations?

I did one of the Brupaks stouts - I can't remember which one but it was described as a dry Irish stout and it was good.

Coopers do an excellent bottled extra stout (although maybe you should make your own mind up before accepting my word on it :)) If their stout kit is anything like it it's worth a shot.

IMO Brupaks Black Moor stout tasted very similar to Original Guinness (the one in bottles/cans with the large cream coloured label), not too much fizz but got a good head on it, I would recommend that or the Muntons imperial stout, that was a also good kit.

That's Guinness Extra Stout often referred to here as old man stout. It is a truly wonderful stout far superior and richer in flavor than Guinness Draught.

just a question from a newie (ish) when doing a stout kit if using spray malt is it best to use dark spraymalt?

yes, generally stout uses dark extract. You should be able to find many good stout recipes for extract online (check byo.com). You'll need specialty grains, in particular cystal, chocolate, and roasted barley.

newkie, I may be reading this wrong, but I think CW is means when he replaces the kit sugar for spraymalt, I would have thought that Dark Spraymalt would be ok, albeit making it very black. I used some Vina Extra Dark Spraymalt to prime my Muntons Stout kit, it came out great.

and yes I agree, Original is a much better drink than the draught stuff in cans

If you do go about adding specialty grains you might consider using light extract and adding the grains e.g. chocolate, roast barley to gain the colour/flavour. You don't know what's been added to the extract (and in what proportion) to darken it. I'm not suggesting there's anything in there that shouldn't be there, just that you may want more control yourself. If adding specialty grains is a step too far for now then dark extract will be absolutely fine.

Another vote for original Extra Stout by the way :)

go with instinct and go for dark spraymalt for fermentation. its going to be the opus memorandi for next paddy's day

This is my bottled larger, first atempt. Tastes nice (well i like it). Cant wait for my IPA and to start a stout!!
