Hydrometer confusion - help!

Post by chorltonbrewers » Wed Mar 11, 2009 9:27 pm

Hi,
I started my brew on 8 March and took the first reading with the hydrometer today. The hydrometer didn't stay still so I dont know what number to use - it sunk down initially, then slowly moved out of the liquid to a reading of 80, then started sinking again - how do I use this thing?!
Thanks

The brew is still fermenting so the bubbles will kling to the hydro and make it float, then they burst and it sinks, then they cling and it floats....

in a few days the fermentation will die down, then your hydro wil float steadily and you can get a reading..

If you can still see bubbles rising then you dont need a hydrometer yet. :)
