I had a nice pint of speckled hen the other night at a pub. Can anyone recommend a home brew kit that would be broadly similar to this ? I have been brewing larger 3 or 4 times now and want to try ale.
Is ale similar to larger to brew? I'd better read up.

Re: Speckled hen
Don't know of any kits that would be exactly like Speckled Hen, but there is a recipe in Graham Wheeler's book, complete with an extract version to try - if, of course, you feel like moving away from kits!
Re: Speckled hen
well danny boy....... what kits have you done so far?
most kits are basically the same brewing process. if youre impressed with kit lagers then i think youre gonna love ale kits.

The owner of my LHBS recommended Munton's Smuggler's Special as being near to Speckled Hen. I have it in my FV at the moment, so I can't really say if it is, but I'm giving it a go!

Re: Speckled hen
i'd be interested to know how that smugglers kit goes, had a bottle of old crafty hen the other night. its 6.5% and oak matured so i'd love to find something similar and do it with oak chips or something. bloody fantastic ale!!
Re: Speckled hen
I'm drinking Munton's Smugglers Special as I type. Brewed it in November for Christmas after deciding that Midas Gold was the best kit I'd done.
The Smugglers went from 1051 to 1015 which I reckon is 4.9% ABV. That's about the only detail I keep, I don't remember it sticking (I just give them yeast vit and a rouse).
Unfortunately I've never had Speckled Hen so can't help with a comparison but I'd recommend the Muntons 3.6Kg kits.
