Anyone remember Boots bitter? Me and my dad used to brew it in the early eighties .It was lovely ,deep red colour with creamy head. The yeast was a unique clear jelly in a sachet. It was probably made by Muntons and was a one can kit.Closest thing to it so far is probably the Wherry.

By strange coincidence, someone has given me a Boots Best Bitter kit which has been collecting dust in a cupboard for years. BBE date is 2000, so it's not an antique yet...

The can looks fine, so I'll be brewing it at some point, the yeast on this one is a standard dried pack and will be discarded in favour of a dollop of Safale S-04.

Hello sparky glad your back. :D I didn't know they were still making it in the late nineties. The jelly yeast was really good and didn't give any unpleasant yeasty flavours that some people associate with homebrew.Let us know how it turns out [-o<

Cheers, I certainly will. I'm guessing the can is around 1998 vintage given the BBE date. I've done old kits before though, and I've no reason to expect this one to be a dud - it might need a bit more in the way of hop additions though.

I need to get cracking, beer stocks are now critically low... #-o

IMHO all the Boots kits from the 70's were c**p and far removed from the excellent premium kits we can all now enjoy. :D

Well, I'm just making the Boots kit up, so we'll see!

Mind you, I have added 1Kg of spraymalt and some Goldings and Progress hops I had to hand... Smells good anyway. 8)

Well, the 1.7Kg can of extract looked and smelled fine, perhaps a little darker that it should be, but that's to be expected with the vintage. The lacquer on the inside of the can was perfect, so no metal or rust contamination either - which would have meant down the sink.

I did give the whole lot a quick boil though, just to make sure there was nothing nasty in it.

The Safale is doing it's job now, it's bubbling away nicely.

Funnily enough, the Boots standard bitter was a lot better than their Premium kit.

The best thing about Boots kits was the yeast - it stayed firmly glued to the bottom of the bottle.

Boots also did a very good Dry Irish stout and Strong London Ale. They must have stopped selling homebrew gear about seven or eight years ago at a guess.
