Re: Geordie Mild - fiddled with
That's a lot of crystal malt. I think it's going to have a unique taste
I doubt the tiny quantities of treacle or molasses will be noticeable though. It will be interesting to hear how it turns out.

Best wishes

recently used crystal with a Woodforde's Admiral's kit - 200g mashed for 75 mins at 65c. steeped 20g of Goldings too - racked it to a corny around mid-Feb and the leftovers to 4 bottles with a cooper's carb drop in each. wierd thing is the beer in the corny tastes sweet (as though the crystal has neutralised the bitterness) but the stuff in the bottles, well they are on a par with the best beer i've ever brewed. corny is going in a dark corner in the garage for a month or two in the hope it tastes like the bottled version. last time i thought i'd over cooked things was adding 60g of Saaz to a Gt Eastern kit, which was over powered by hop taste at week 4 but was A1 by week 8. best ingredient we've got i reckon, time ...

Crystal does leave some residual sweetness, which is why it's best not to use too much. The bottled beer probably has a higher carbonation level which, being acidic, counteracts the sweetness.kfm wrote:wierd thing is the beer in the corny tastes sweet (as though the crystal has neutralised the bitterness) but the stuff in the bottles, well they are on a par with the best beer i've ever brewed. corny is going in a dark corner in the garage for a month or two in the hope it tastes like the bottled version.
I made a Geordie Mild up with the standard 1Kg of spraymalt, and steeped 100g of Crystal and 150g of Chocolate Malt at 70°C for 30 mins. I also added 12g of Progress hops, given a short boil then left to steep in the liquor for 30 mins. The result was very nice indeed, and impressed those who tried it.

Re: Geordie Mild - fiddled with
alreet all
im a northern lad,so i love me real ales, bitters, milds n stouts. i shop regularly at wilkinsons for household stuff n DIY stuff and as they sell home brewing kits, ive been meaning and thinking of getting one and taking up the home brew hobby.today i finally snapped and i bought 'geordies mild' kit,25litre container, spoon, beer enhanser, beer finer and steriliser powder. as i am an absolute beginner i havnt got a clue really...apart from the brief instuctions in the kit. do i need any more ingrediants or equiptment (im going to try putting treacle in thanks to Trunky for that)? and do you think it would be worth putting 2-3 heaped teaspoons of horlicks to add some extra maltiness to it??? and do i really need to bottle it as i was just going to keep it in the comtainer when ready and dunk a cup in and pour in my glass??
cheers,
john
