Which cider kits are the best Magners clone?

Post by George Zip » Thu Apr 09, 2009 1:12 pm

Hi guys. I'm looking to make a cider kit for for the summer and I'm a fan of the modern style magners/gaymers ciders which serve well over ice. I don't really like the scrumpy types though. Does anyone have any recomendations?

i really enjoyed the finlandia apple kit. Best way I guess i could describe it is strongbow type cider but far more apple flavours and a fair bit sweeter too. Im definitely making a batch for summer to go over ice, itll be awesome ! It is a fair bit sweeter than magners/bulmers/strongbow cider though so bear that in mind if you do opt for it. More of a strong dry cider man myself but this was a very nice kit all the same, the woman loved it too.

second ollie - Finlandia is the 6th/7th cider kit I have done and, already, by far the best. brewed to 23 litres, 1kg of brewing sugar and kit yeast pitched at 22c. in primary for 17 days at 20c, then bulk primed with 200g of BKE (only because I ran out of glucose when bottling) and bottled - left for 6 days in secondary at same temp. Out in the cold for just over 3 weeks and it has cleared brilliantly. Tasty, well carbonated - I have actually boxed 24 bottles for Xmas so I reckon it will be fly by then .....

I am weak mind you so i bought another kit for xmas, no doubt that wont last either............

definitely worth a try this kit, i reduced mine to 18 litres and still added 1kg of sugar, tastes great and was around 6.5% if i remember correctly

all last year Ollie the beer was getting consumed on the way out of the fermenter so I put aside a couple of weekends in Jan and churned out 8 cornys and 144 bottles (plus 48 bottles of wine). if i can't keep my hands off at least some of that until Xmas then i know i've got a problem. most of the stock is brewferm stuff, which needs the long conditioning time (drank a year-old bottle of Gallia on Thursday that tasted superb) so the bulk production might give it a fighting chance. like the idea of your modification of the Finlandia to 6.5%, on my list now of new brews
