dry hopping
dry hopping
I am at the mo dry hopping some coopers lager with 25g of styrian goldings and just had a pint after its been in there for 3 days and it tasted good and i was wondering is the taste going to improve after a longer time or should i add some more if so should i just take the bag out and add it to that or should i re-sterilize it ?
Re: dry hopping
I'm guessing you've added the dry hop bag to your keg??
Really it all depends how quickly you're likely to drink the beer.....some people say that if you leave the dry hops in there too long it can result in "grassy" flavours. I imagine after a couple of months it might be a bit much....
I usually dry hop in a secondary vessel for up to 2 weeks, but then fish the bag out prior to kegging the brew.
If you are careful, there's only a very small chance of spoiling your beer should you wish to open the keg and retrieve the bag. Just make sure hands are very well washed and rinsed, and try to be very gentle so as keep disturbance of the CO2 blanket and introduction of air to a minimum. Also recommend purging the keg after resealing ie inject CO2 up to say 5psi, allow say 30sec to mix/settle and then release down via the safety valve. Doing this 3 times will reduce the air/oxygen content back down to a very low level.
