great to be back

Post by AT » Sat Dec 09, 2006 2:33 pm

i finally got my broadband online again after a few months :D . I've been busy brewing, i've done six kits all turned out great. I'm trying out the Woodfordes Wherry again after making such a mess of it first time. It seems to be stuck at 1020 but i gave it a stir yesterday and i'll check again tomorrow. I did notice that it smelled sweet is that normal for a 3 kg kit :?: :?: i was very impressed with the youngs lager kit without any hesitation i'd say it's by far the best kit i've done so far. I have a coopers lager in bottles now and i can't wait to taste it. Also i did a coopers draught and i used household sugar just to see what the difference was and after 9 days i tasted it and it was very like cider but after two more weeks it was gone and tasted fine

tempature is fine, it may not be stuck i'll check in the morning, the only problem is that i have no yeast unless you count bread yeast and i won't bore you with the lack of homebrew products in this one horse country (Ireland) byt i have no way of getting any in the near future

if i pitched bread yeast this late what effect would it have to the taste? would it even finish the job?

i ordered enough so if it happens again i won't be caught, i also got some beer kit enhancers for my next kits. Can anybody tell me if they're any good? i was wondering if it's possible to use only honey in a kit and if so do i use the same amount and what difference in taste would it make to the final product in comparision to glucose sugar which i use now and am very happy with. I used honey to prime two bottles in my last kit and i don't know maybe it was my imagination but the bubbles seemed tighter and it seemed to keep a better head

Wherry seems to have started again for no reason, the airlock is not active but the does appear to be quite a lot of bubbles rising also it doesn't seem to smell as sweet as it did a few days ago. It looks like were back on the road

Welcome back AT. Did you get your gas? I got mine off BOC in the end.
In Ireland Grape n Grain in Dublin are probably the best of the bunch along with Glengarriff Home Brew Shop as both are willing to do special orders. Having said that the range on offer is rather limited. I order smaller stuff from Hop & Grape and Hop Shop as postage cost is not an issue (yeast, hops etc.). Either that or order a LOT at once as delivery is £17 for up to 30KG.

Hi Niall nice to see another Paddy, i kinda stalled on the idea til i get a suitable fridge to keep two cornies in. How did you get it off BOC? and how much? once i said the word homebrew they were ready to hang the phone up on me!! The only place i bought off over here was the homebrew shop in Limerick "very limited" even for a kit brewer like myself
