I've just spotted this cheap immersion heater on eBay...looks ideal for a 25l FV......

Can anyone think of a reason I shouldn't buy it, please? The temp range is 17-35 degrees so should be just the job?

Cheers, Mark (Nottingham).

Same one same place as I got mine, so yes I would buy it, it works well for me, but of course you have to make sure you keep it clean when not using and well sanitised when you do, but on the whole I would say a great buy, =D>

I have no experience with immersion heaters, but a fair bit of experience with e-bay.

All I would say is... Item Location: Hong Kong

Maybe I'm being unfair, but i have had e-bay purchases coming from such far flung places not actually turn up at my doorstep. But thats just my own personal experience.

Lookg good for the price, but is 50w powerfull enough?

I had an electrim one but it became unreliable after about 5 brews so I dont trust it anymore.

It either doesnt heat, or over heats REALLY hot.

After several wasted hours trying to set the fiddly little knob I have given up.

Hopefully I can get a kegerator of some kind working by next winter.

I would admit that its worth spending a little more money and getting a brand name, I acquired one that sells for nearly £30 and its very accurate and reliable.

SWMBO bought me one from a local pet and aquatics store a "Superfish Combi-Heater + Protector 50W" which cost £15. http://www.superfish.nl

Works fine so far (set at 2*C above the level we want it) but not sure how long that will last if we keep doing Coopers kits

Most of the no name electrical stuff on Ebay that comes from the far east, is made to a price point. I.E. you get what you pay for. I wouldn't trust my fish to it nor my beer.

Do a google on 50 watt aquarium heaters you should be able to find something for around £10-15.

Cheers

I bought a similar one from Ebay, it WAS CRAP. Didn't increase the temp of a filled f.v of water by a single degree in 3 days. Sent it back, got another one, same thing, it cost £12. My advice is, looks too good to be true. Coming from Hong Kong will be a nightmare if it isn't "fit for purpose". The old "get what you pay for" saying.

MY SUCKERS HAVE GONE WRINKLY!!

Post by Jabberwoc » Fri Jul 10, 2009 5:53 pm

No, I've not quickly downed 8 pints of Wherry................
It's a discovery I made......if you leave the suction cups from a cheap chinese heater in the residue of a Woodforde's Wherry kit for a couple of days because you're too bone idle to clean it immediately this is the result; useless suckers!!

If anyone's interested.......the heater's rubbish.

I did an experiment......a pint of water was raised by 2.5% overnight and was still 1 degree below the setting required (21 deg C).

Back to the heat belt..............anyone got a temperature regulator for sale, please?!

All the best,
Mark.

Mark; I don't say these things for the good of my health. I'm trying to help out here.

Now I advise ye go to a decent, local pet shop / Aquarists suppliers and pay about the £15.00 mark for a quality piece of kit. Externally adjustable thermostatically controlled 'Aquarium Heater'. The things formed, over the decades, to keep potentially £K's worth of peoples fish alive ~ and now trusted to do so.

Screw the " Belts ", and their moving up and down. Adding a quilt. Removing a quilt. Putting in the garage. Bringing in from the garage. FFS! Why make work for yeself? Just Make Beer!

Have I ever lied to ye before ....?
