First Barrel

Post by simoncummins » Wed May 06, 2009 4:47 pm

I have done a cupple of brews in bottles and they have been very good. I now want to try using my King Keg top tap barrel and have a few questions if you can help.
1) Can i do half in the barrel and half in bottles.
2) When it is in the barrel can i then put it in a bottle to transport (Round to mates ect ) it if so how long can it be in the bottle.
3) I guess you add co2 to the keg when the beer stops coming out of tap. But how much co2.
4) Can the barrel be moved after second fermentation.
Thanks Simon C.

Hi -

1. Yep - done this many times. Prime the bottles as normal; but of course remember to reduce the keg primimg sugar in proportion.
2. Never tried it: but I'd have thought "Kind of". A bit like lemonade - as soon as you crack the bottle's seal, you introduce air and start losing CO2/carbonation; leave it too long and the stuff will be flat and stale. If you're just talking about filling (say) a 2L plastic bottle, then going straight out and getting it drunk within a few hours I'd have thought it should survive quite well. Wouldn't want to wait for days though.
3. Yep. I have the 'wdiget' system, so can top up the gas very precisely to whatever pressure level I want; but with the S30 system you just give it a quick 1/2 to 1 second blast. Too much and it'll relieve via the safety rubber - but I never really trusted that to lift at any particular pressure...
4. Well "yes" - but of course you risk disturbing the sedimented yeast and clouding your beer up. Benefit of the KKTT is the float system - so a little clouding at the bottom isn't usually a problem, as the float draws off the clearest beer from the top. Probably carrying it carefully from one room to another would cause no issue - but I wouldn't fancy throwing it in the car and driving round to a mate's with it!

Hope that's helpful.
Re the KK - they can be an @R$£ to get sealed. Use loads of vaseline on the o-ring, and resist the temptation to crank the lid down with heavy torque - this usually just flattens and distorts the o-ring, and does not aid sealing in any way. If the o-ring's lubed and positioned properly, just a 'tweak' is enough.

I have tested the kk barrels in a bath of water and no leaks but over 4 days seen to loose a bit of pressure but can't find where from.
