Liquid Malt Extract
Liquid Malt Extract
I've just bought a Coopers IPA and decided to do it with light liquied malt extract.
Do I put in the full 1.5k or go like for like as with spray malt instead of sugar in other kits?
Thanks,
Rikpo.

Re: Liquid Malt Extract
I think you generally use less DME than you would with LME. I think the figure is 0.85 x DME than LME. So that would mean you need to multiply the DME / Sugar weight by 1.15 to get the LME value I think.
The complication is that you then need to convert to volume unless you want to weigh it out exactly. I'm not sure of the conversion there though.

Re: Liquid Malt Extract
Put the whole can in, the cans are that size, because that's how much you need. A 1.5kg can of LME is the equivalent of 1kg DME.

Thanks Mickhew,
I thought it would be the full can as you can't really store once its been opened but best make sure and where better to find out than this site.
Thanks again,
Rikpo.

Remember that LME need to be boiled to pasteurise it.

Dissolve in boiling water and return to the boil to get the hot break. Continue boiling for some time to pasteurise (I'd give it at least 30 minutes). Add Irish Moss and cool quickly to get the cold break.Yeastman wrote:Is that boiled in the tin or poured out in some water?

might as well put the whole lot in though you don't actually need it. 1kg of DME is roughly 1.25kg LME as DME is only 2% liquid whereas LME is roughly 20%.

If I were you I'd grab some Protofloc Tablets from Barley Bottom, much easier to handle and just the job.OldSpeckledBadger wrote:It helps protein coagulation resulting in a clearer beer.Yeastman wrote:ok thats clear now but whats the irish moss?

Just had a look. He took a risk and got away with it. And probably got an inferior end result. It's your beer and your choice.Yeastman wrote:I am a little confused as i just been looking at the pics of chris the fish doing his brewers choice ipa and in one of the pics he seems to be pouring his lme straight into his fv?

Re: Liquid Malt Extract
If I recall, there are two sorts of LME, one of them still has enzymatic activity in it and must be boiled for a period before its good to use, the other sort has no such activity and can be used 'as is'
EDME for example makes Non-Diastatic Malt Extract and Diastatic Malt Extract
As far I was aware, Coopers LME is a Non-Diastatic Malt Extract, so can be used straight from the tin into the FV (I think Muntons and Brupaks are the same, but don't quote me on that)

Re: Liquid Malt Extract
No diastatic just indicates that some Diastase is present. You can use diastatic extract to mash things like flaked barley. AFAIK no LME goes through the boil process prior to condensation so is un-pasteurised.
