Holiday & Burton Bridge Summer Ale

Post by AlexCricket » Mon Jun 15, 2009 11:43 am

After delays a plenty I have now finally got my next kit - a Burton Bridge Summer Ale - and I have now got a couple of questions.

1. I go on holiday on Saturday for a week - would I be better getting the kit fermenting and leave it to it while I'm away or start when I return. I ask as, being a summer ale, I quite fancied drinking it soonish and want to give it a bit of time to mature.

2. Being a fool I bought 2 bags of LSM and now I have got the kit I see I only need 800g in total. I have a bag of brew sugar that I mainly just use for priming but I could just make up the 300g with that OR should I just make the kit with the extra 200g of LSM and not worry - any suggestions?

Thanks in anticipation of the knowledgeable help I always seem to receive on this forum.

1. It would be fine whilst away, but I suppose my only worry on not being able to check it, is if the fermentation goes "nuclear" and overflows (unlikely I know)

2. more spraymalt, less sugar generally means better body in your beer, but you could happily use 500g spraymalt and 300g sugar. Or, just split one of the spraymalt bags and reseal it - it will keep, and you can add it to next brew. Alternative would be to use 1000g of spraymalt and have a slightly stronger beer (which is what i'd do! )

Hi Alex
I agree, It should be ok to leave. if you start it at least 4-5 days before you go, The fermentation should have settled down by then.
I'd just use the 1kg of spraymalt and no sugar.

I opened my first pint of Burton Bridge Summer Ale yesterday after only eight days in the bottle and I'm impressed. I used 500 grams light hopped spraymalt, 300 grams golden syrup and 100 grams Tate & Lyle. Looking forward to a good summer now. I always sample one pint at eight days for research purposes but I'll leave the rest of this ale for at least another week when it should be even better.

Sounds like I might be able to enjoy a Summer Ale before October then :D
