Newbie Error?

Post by Elbows » Thu Jun 18, 2009 4:34 pm

Hi,
I've just sealed up my first ever brew but think I've made a mistake and not mixed it well enough. I can see some sediment around the base of the FV.
Should I open it up and give it a good stir before the yeast starts to produce gas or would this risk contamination?

See sig for brew details.

Any advice welcome!

Give it a good shake up, no need to take the lid off.

Hi Elbows
Welcome. I agree with jubby, give it a good shake or sanitize a spoon and give it a good stir.
Just before I add the yeast, I usually give the wort a good 10 min beating with a slotted paddle, to introduce as much oxygen as possible without splashing it out of the Fermentation Vessel.

A great tip I picked up on this board is to use a cordless drill with a sanitised stirring spoon attached (you will probably have to take a stanley knife to the end of it - if its plastic, at any rate!) and stir the wort for a full five minutes - more if you can be bothered.

Just make sure the drill and chuck are clean, you don't want bits of crap dropping into the FV!

Another great tip (from Chris-x1) is to use a 5 litre jug (sanitised, of course) and re-circulate the contents of the FV, until you've mixed the whole lot at least once. To do this, a tap at the bottom is probably essential. :)

Great tips guys, thanks!
I gave it a stir and it's bubbling away nicely now.

Should I give it a shake over the next couple of days too??

Thanks again.
