What are the benefits of secondary fermentation

Post by redskinweasel » Fri Jun 26, 2009 1:20 pm

I have recently read somewhere on the net that by transferring the beer to a second FV after primary fermentation (3-5 days) for secondary fermentation (for another 5 days) can considerably improve the flavour of the beer.
Apparently this is to do with the beer clearing more before it is transferred to either a primed keg or bottles.

Does anyone have any experience of this or do most people go straight to keg or bottle after primary fermentation?

I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who has attempted this and how things turned out.

I am at day 4 of primary fermentation at the mo so it's decision time tomorrow!

Cheers :D

Completely agree with Chris
I normally do a 14 day primary fermentation then either transfer to bottle or polypin (for secondary) or mainly straight to cornie keg.

Reckon I'm gonna leave in FV for 10 days then.
