Coopers Stout kit

Post by chopperswookie » Thu Jan 04, 2007 9:37 pm

Did this kit last night with 500g of brewing sugar and 500g of dark spraymalt. Gave it a good stir (darting arm was hurting this morning!) added the yeast and put it in the back room. However tonight was having a few sets of practise arrows and a load of froth started coming out of the hole in my ferm bin.

on the positive side i know my stirring wasn't in vain and its pitched well but i am worried that because i haven't added the airlock, forth brew now, have never used one, what spurts out will go back into the ferm bin. is this ok or will it infect the brew?

blow off tube
why skim the head?

it has seemed to calm down tonight. got it on video on my phone brilliant. does the level of activity an indication of how good the brew will be?

just barrelled my Coopers Stout today after ten days the longest i have ever left a brew and it looked a lovely jet black! Heres to a very happy Paddys day. Just a quick question since it is stout is there anything to look out for during priming or can it just be left room temp for five days then moved to the out house as with every other brew i have done?

Some taste notes as promised. (sorry about the caps, I've cut and pasted form elsewhere, just put your fingers in your ears)

FANTASTIC. LOVELY PRIMED EXACTLY WHAT I WANTED FOR PADDY'S WEEKEND. THE PINT IS POURED FROM HALF OF THE BARREL. TASTE WISE, A TRUE STOUT, HEAVY WITH A SLIGHT CHOCOLATE TASTE. I KNOW IT SHOULD BE LICORICE BUT MORE CHOCOLATE TO ME. WELL CHUFFED.

I loved the coopers stout. Each time I made it the krausen was out of this world. Exploded the first time painting the walls, ceiling and floors.....

Tasted amazing though :)

I've been considering trying a Stout. I was going to use EDME, but i hear more and more reccomendations for Coopers.

i would totally reccommend coopers, i think daab would as well. i did mine with dme. i did only do the kit to 35 pints not the 40 stated on the tin which i think has added to the heavyness. one of my mates had a half last night (not a stout drinker) and he said apart from the head, goes after a few sups and not the white artificially produced by nitrious, they said it was just like guinness. what a compliment

Thanks for the taste notes wookie, much appreciated! 8)

I was looking at these kits to try myself, though I've got to bottle the Coopers Sparkling Ale first, and then a Wherry is next in line for the brewing bin... 8-[

...but I'll be ready for a stout next.
