whats going wrong

Post by moobli » Tue Jul 28, 2009 6:03 am

looks like another kit failure for me
my coopers lager
followed the instructions to the letter 6 days in fv at a constant 23%
day 6 reading fg 1.010
same on days 7
straight to bottles this time primed with 1/2 tsp of tate and lyle
week in the room at 23%
and so far a week in the fridge on its side
tried one last night bit of sediment on the bottle bottom, bit of fizz when opened
then pour into a glass and its brown like a watered bitter
and tastes undercooked , have i now got another 41 pints of draincleaner??
and yet i have no problems with TC

my first kit was a geordie lager made with spraymalt and not sugar and that failed after kegging it
cant see whats wrong with this one

You should store bottle upright so that the yeast settles to the bottom. If the yeast is on the side of the bottle it'll all get stirred up as you pour. It's also worth leaving the beer in the FV for a few extra days once the FG has been reached so that most of the yeast settles out before you bottle. Two weeks isn't long enough for the beer to mature properly either. Give it another couple of weeks.
Best wishes

was wondering if it had any thing to do with me keeping the lid of the fv snapped down tight not just sitting on the top so i have got an airtight seal

keeping FV lid on will do nothing - I do it all the time.

brown and cloudy is def down to you leaving them to stand on their sides.

If it tastes wrong - there may be a host of reasons. I would suggest though, that a week in the warm and a week in the cold is not enough time to condition. Would suggest a week in the cold per 10 points of gravity drop from the OG. So if you started at 1040, and bottled at 1010, you should condition in the cold for three weeks MINIMUM.

just checked this batch that has been in the shed cool condition
still brown plenty of head and fizz just tasting toffee/fudge not nice
this was the coopers cervoza
yet was given a cheap geordie lager kit for my birthday and fv it 29 o7 o9 and from the start it looked like a lager
a week later it is pale and smelling like a lager
so thats nye on £25 on top range kits
and its a £7 kit that delivers

My last kit was the coopers mex. Only opened 1 bottle as its just a week old to be honest I don't think its gonna be my kinda thing. BUT the mrs reckons its going to be nice once the fizz is in it.

Whereas my first kit the coopers euro I could sup at all day but she couldn't stand it..

Its horses for courses. What beers would you normally buy from the offies.

I always prime lager with 160grams of sugar which is about 1 teaspoon per pint. I like it fizzy like it's out of a can.

i primed with 1/2 tsp of tate and lyle in each bottle
conditioned in the bottle in the warm for 10 days then in the shed for 10 days then into the fridge for a few days then drinking time
not that ive got to drink any of the 80+pints of lager ive brewed
but just checked the sg of the geordie and its down from 1.039 on 29/07/09 @21%
down to 1.010 on 06/08/09 @21% going to check tomorrow and if its stopped then i'll bottle this lot
whats the abv of that

You should be looking at 6-8 weeks before you're thinking a beer is no good. Before that, they aren't good.....

I've nearly finished drinking a Coopers Cerveza at the mo. I made it up with glucose and primed in with 350g glucose (I know it's alot but I wanted to experiment) and it turned out great. As I went on hols in the middle, I primed and bottled it, put it in the fridge while I was away for 2 weeks and then got it out in the warm for a week, before getting it back in the fridge again!!!! Sounds a bit complicated but it worked. After a week back in the cold it tasted good, 2 weeks was better and the last few that have just about survived 3 weeks the flavour is great. I can only think the problems are coming from mixing the sediment about by having the bottles laying down. You're gonna have to get a bigger fridge so you can stand them up!!!!!!
