Coopers Dark Ale + Dark LME + Barrel Primed With Treacle?

Post by redskinweasel » Sat Aug 01, 2009 2:39 am

This home brew is the biz, defo got the bug!

Just got another coopers on. This time the dark ale kit + dark LME as I've heard good things on this forum and I also like Theakstons OP, which I'm lead to believe is similar?

Anyway, been buying some books about home brew and got a dave line book with a malt extract recipe for theakstons OP and treacle is used to prime the keg. Has anyone tried this as I'm thinkin bout using treacle instead of sugar to prime my keg?
Also, is it any good using treacle on a kit or is that a waste of time?

I'm hoping to do extract brewing as well as kits by the end of the year, so I'll probs brew the recipe from the book then, but for now I just want to get my head round the kit process and maybe experiment a bit.

Cheers :D

RSW; If Dave suggested it, it can't be far wrong

Important thing to remember here is that he's talking about Priming the Keg. So, that amounts to a relatively minuscule amount of treacle. Fine. I'm sure it could indeed impart a certain something to a brew.

However, if ye should ever step across that line ( :? #-o) and start wondering about adding any more of such a potently strong tasting substance to a kit? Well ....

If ye'd like to see for yeself where I'm coming from? Pour a pint of ye favourite beer and dump some treacle in it. Stir well in. Taste it. Then dump the beer down the sink! Harsh. But it teaches one a valuable lesson

Cheers Ditch,

Valid point re ruining the beer by being too experimental!

Like you say, priming with treacle may add something new to the brew so I reckon I'm gonna have a go.

Cheers mate!

On another note, I've already got a Coopers stout kit etc.......so another couple of weeks and I'll be doin your recipe :D
