What Real Ale Kit should I brew?

Post by scottmoss » Wed Oct 07, 2009 8:57 am

Hi,

I'm looking to start my first real ale homebrew (have done many wine kits). I'm going to the homebrew shop on Saturday and I don't know which real ale kit to get?

I would like it to be fairly straight forward (including sugar if pos) - as this is my first brew and would also something that I would be able to drink pretty quickish (First brew - no stock pile (YET! )).

Any recommendations out there?

Thanks Guys,

Scott

Woodfordes Wherry, or any 3kg kit, some will tell you not to bother with Woodfordes, I disagree and think they make a great beer.

Thanks for the advice, do they clear pretty quick? I've got a top tap king keg so that should help right?

I've also been told that brupaks Pride of Yorkshire is also a good ale?

Thanks again,

No, wherry won't clear quickly in the keg, don't let that be the deciding factor, it's not really ready before 6-7 weeks anyway, and it takes about 3 in the keg to clear, although you could fine it. Honestly though a cracking beer, don't miss it because of slow clearing times.

I'm half way through 'sampling' my first ever brew, I know I should have left it longer but I can't believe how good it tastes. It's a Tom Caxton Real Ale. My 2nd brew is all bottled and stored, a coopers draught which will be sampled probably next Thursday. I've heard the tom caxton real ale gets even better the longer you leave it but at this rate i'll never be able to confirm that :)

Hello

Thanks again for all the replies. I decided to do a woodfordes wherry and a Victorian bitter (started them both today).

I thought I could leave the wherry to condition whilst drinking the Victorian bitter!

I'll post pictures of the finished articles!
