Part Keg / Part Bottle Question

I am currently fermenting a St. Peter's Ruby Red ale(http://www.thethriftyshopper.co.uk/brew ... d-ale.aspx) and was gonna keg the lot. But am wondering whether to make about 10 bottles and keg the rest.

I'm gonna mix the brew with sugar in another bucket then make 10 bottles from this putting the rest in a standard Young's keg.

My question is this...

As there will be more air in the keg (due to the 10 bottles) should I add a extra bit of sugar to the keg or will it be OK?

Or should I just abandon the whole idea of part bottle / part keg?

I'd suggest CO2 is said to be heavier than air. Thus, a one second burst from the big 'bottle' should lay a blanket down over that kegged beer and thus protect it, pretty much no matter what.

Look at it another way: Drink off half the keg. That too leaves more 'air' (space). We give the keg a burst of CO2 to compensate. Does the beer then quickly turn to rats piss ....? :wink:

apologies ditch but i may have to correct you on that. and yes, i am a physicist (doing my masters in particle physics at the moment).

it's not quite as simple as dense gas displacing lighter gas because gases diffuse into each other. if it were that simple then in the atmosphere all the carbon dioxide would be found around your height, oxygen up to the top of the tallest buildings and then nitrogen up to the top of the atmosphere (there's some noble gases in there somewhere too but i forget how dense they would be).

essentially, you can squirt gas into an area but immediately the oxygen and carbon dioxide will start diffusing together and you'll end up with a mixture. it will certainly help but you can't erradicate all the oxygen being there.

Thats what i do with my coopers stout funnily enough, i always bottle ten for a relation who as a taste for it and put the rest in my barrel with about 50g of white sugar not had any probs so far.

No, dont add anymore priming sugar than is recommended by your kit/recipe, add more CO2 as and when required to dispense at a good carbonation rate
