Bottle Storage In My Shed
Bottle Storage In My Shed
My Brupak Fixby Gold that I bottled up has pretty much finished up being stored at room temperature for its 2 weeks “warm bottle conditioning†and is about to go out into the shed for its final “cool bottle conditioning†process.
I’ve just had a tidy up in the shed and I’ve realised there might only enough room to store them on their sides. Does this present any clearing problems in relation to the sediment dropping to the side instead of bottom?
Or should I just pull my finger out and make more space so they are stored upright?
Thanking you kindly………..hc

Re: Bottle Storage In My Shed
Definitely make more space! If you store the bottles on their sides the sediment will collect there, rather than at the bottom of the bottles. When you come to open them you'll have to tilt them upright, then back on their sides to pour the beer, so the sediment will be kicked up and you'll end up with a cloudy beer and lots of wind!
I've had to put up two lots of shelving in my garage just to store bottles/kegs, but if you're really pressed for space you could always put as many as you can on the floor, then put a piece of plywood (or similar lightweight but rigid material) on top of them and then more bottles on top?

If you store beer on it's side you are exposing more surface area of the beer to the air in the bottle increasing its oxidization and also the yeast in the bottle is not going to compact as well since it is going to be spread along the length of the bottle. I suggest that you roll up the shirt sleeves and get to work on the shed and clear yourself some proper room, after all home-made beer is a precious commodity.

I have x2 kegs stored on my shelf in the shed! Just got another keg and I'm wondering wether to risk 3??? It's only a wooden shed with a piece of wood screwed at the ends and sides!Ditch wrote:Middo wrote:

Blimey, Middo; You must hang a damn good shelf! I was considering my own, rapidly increasing, beer stocks the other day. Concluded I'd better get my mate the welder involved. I've run out of floor space and window sills, see? No way would I dare put a keg on a shelf I'd put up

Ooooh, blimey, Scotmoss; It's risky, isn't it? Think if the weight Did rip the timber apart one day? Lot to lose there, mate
No. I'd go with benching. I'll have my mate run me up some trestles and lay shuttering ply table tops over them.
My own problem is, see; My place is all stone built. Get a good fixing into a nice, big stone and it'd hold a horse. Hit a small stone though, or anything in between them? Whole lot's liable to rip out and crash! Imagine the heart break of hearing the lot come down some time!

True, very true. I will take a picture when I get in and show you my shed shelf, then you can all laugh in horror at how it is holding the weight!Ditch wrote:Ooooh, blimey, Scotmoss; It's risky, isn't it? Think if the weight Did rip the timber apart one day? Lot to lose there, mate![]()

Thanks all. I've shelved all the wife's weekend projects and I'm now dealing with a matter of extreme urgency...hc

By 'shelving' I meant the 4-tiered, stand alone shelving units; not the kind you mount on the wall. I wish my DIY skills were that good - I would never trust one of them to hold a keg! Like you said, too much to lose there.Ditch wrote: Blimey, Middo; You must hang a damn good shelf! ... No way would I dare put a keg on a shelf I'd put up
I would love to see that picture!scottmoss wrote: I will take a picture when I get in and show you my shed shelf, then you can all laugh in horror at how it is holding the weight!

I'll try and remember when I get home to take a picture for you all to laugh at.

Hi,
I finally took some photos that are crap quality due to me using my phone (the camera is at the inlaws).
I took a few so i'll post them all, I'll also add some better quality one's when I get the camera back.
Here goes:-

go on scott maybe you can help me being a user of KK top taps, I put a brew in 1 for the first time the other week after 2 weeks it had no carbination so got nothing out of it. Any ideas what I can do to find the probs with it. I thought the thing attached to the tap was suppose to float on the beer, yet it has a large thing on the end which just sinks to the bottom. Maybe am thinking I have a seal gone somewhere but not sure where to start, was bought 2nd hand off ebay.
keg 1 : (Drinking) : Amarillo extract brew
keg 2 : (Conditioning) : Summer Ale extract
keg 3 : (Conditioning) : Lightening extract Goldings only
keg 4 : (Conditioning) : Lightening etxract
FV1 : FV2 :
Bottled: Brewferm Diabolo, Brewferm frambois
next up: coppers stout:)

Re: Bottle Storage In My Shed
That doesn't look as bad as I was expecting! If you're thinking about putting another keg up there you could always screw in a few support studs under each end of the shelf frame. Or just do that anyway to be on the safe side!
Re: Bottle Storage In My Shed
I'm not to sure fella to be honest, It is meant to float and draw the ale from the top. I've only just got my second kk and not used that and only used the current kk once (currently got Wherry in). I'll have a look when I fill the KK up with my Milestone Black Pearl on Saturday/Sunday. But the kk with the Wherry in is keeping the pressure perfectly and only had to add x2 8gr CO2 bulbs and it's only got a few pints left!fractureman wrote:go on scott maybe you can help me being a user of KK top taps, I put a brew in 1 for the first time the other week after 2 weeks it had no carbination so got nothing out of it.
