King Keg TopTap

Post by PaulRaynorStoleMyKFC » Thu Nov 26, 2009 4:38 pm

Hi, tomorrow will be the day for me to use this for the first time for my Coopers stout.

Was just wondering if anyone could give me any tips or point me to a good 'idiots guide' for using one of these, I will be taking off the lid, O ring, tap and the arm inside and samitising inside the keg.

Also I know to use vaseline to grease the O ring and the thread of the lid and not to over tighten.

Is this it?

I would hate to nacker my brew up at this late stage, cheers guys

I have 5 KKTT's and only had a problem with one (perished input valve rubber) I replaced all the 'floats' with Hambleton Bards and only re-vaseline the O-ring every 4th or 5th brew and the tap hardly ever, never get any problems, they are now 100% trouble free. I only tighten cap hand tight, and the tap is only threaded hand tight.

After priming your beer, check carefully for leaks over the next few days. After barrelling and priming a recent brew, it failed to carbonate..... then I heard a hissing coming from the lid. The plastic seal which keeps the O ring in place had split away from the lid, so the O ring was no longer being kept in shape. #-o I'm now waiting for a new lid to arrive....

Mate you can buy in very cheap 'seal kits' that provide all the seals you need in case of a perished one. I find a smear of Veg Oil stops them getting brittle.

I just been to check on mine which has one of my xmas brews in, is as flat as a pancake might see if the local HBS has this seals kit & buy another budget keg as well cos if it doesn't hold pressure by this time next week it's going in the bin & the brew into a budget keg.
Very dissapointed in what was touted as a premium keg, think I'll stick to my budget ones.
keg 1 : (Drinking) : Amarillo extract brew
keg 2 : (Conditioning) : Summer Ale extract
keg 3 : (Conditioning) : Lightening extract Goldings only
keg 4 : (Conditioning) : Lightening etxract

FV1 : FV2 :
Bottled: Brewferm Diabolo, Brewferm frambois
next up: coppers stout:)

Fractureman; This is why I use Basic Kegs. They're Basic. I.e, Simple. There's so little to them and thus little to go wrong. I put beer in one end. I get beer out the other ~ Damn! Now I've left myself wide open for some fruit cake to say that expresses Me perfectly!

It's true though. With my BK's, I get at my beer when I'm ready. Top Tappers (any of them) make ye wait till there's a certain level of pressure built up in there. I Don't Like my beer served under that level of pressure. Period.

That's just my personal tastes, of course. But, my experience of TT's was so bitter, it's put me right off them for life. Fair play to Kev, if he can orchestrate their handling just so ~ and likes the beer they begrudgingly hand over. Perhaps PRSMKFC will fall into that camp?

Unfortunately it's not the seal that's gone. There is a plastic lip that runs round the inside of the lid to keep the O ring in place. This has split away from the lid allowing the O ring to mis-shape when the lid is tightened. :(

Just started to get things sorted for my Kegging today and I don't have any petroleum jelly in.

I am leaving myself open for all kinds of mickey taking here but I do have some other 'lubricants' could I use something else as a substitute?

That will teach me to do the vaccuming without my pants on!

In all seriousness though, is their any alternative? or is it a case of havine to get my (unlubed and thus far unexplored) arse down to the shop?
