Do you do any filtering?

Post by Garagardo » Fri Dec 04, 2009 11:26 am

Hi,

I am with my first brew, the fermentation stage is over and I will be bottling tomorrow.
This morning I had a look inside and noticed the "goo" in the uppermost side of the FV and some "particles" in suspension ( from the yeast?) on the top of the brew. :out

My question is: do you filter the beer when bottling/keging , or will those "particles" disolve with the liquid's movement when bottling ?
If you filter it, any special technique ? :-k

Thank you for your feedback

P.D. I will check the final gravity tomorrow, but I could smell the alcohol allright , and the colour is a beautiful amber ( St Peters Ruby Red Ale). I cannot wait !

Hi,

No you don't filter the beer because you need yeast to start secondary fermentation. Syphon as much beer as you can without getting any of the slurry (yeast cake) at the bottom.

This will then drop to the bottom of your kegs/bottles. :D

If you do a fairly rough filter it won't damage the flavour, and I think theres other reasons why JS & Fosters taste like crap, I doubt these were marvellous beers before filtration.

However, i've done it, it tastes ages, and it's not worth the trouble. Use finings if you want clear beer

Thank you all for your clear explanations . =D>
Tomorrow, I will look those "suspended" particles in a very different way :D

 Well; At least No One's put their hands up to Fosters! I mean, that stuff really is disgusting, isn't it? I tried some once. Couldn't believe anyone would produce such stuff. Let alone people drink it!

I lived on the stuff for years. Can't believe all those pubs I used to go to and never once did I notice the real ales. What a waste...

I expect the whole Paul Hogan / Crocodile Dundee advertising thing had a certain effect on a certain 'age' group at the time?

Personally, I just came across it one time. Took a sip. Took Another sip, to confirm. Couldn't Believe what I was tasting ..... and that was That!

Utter filth!

I heard once that the creator of fosters said that he knew it was "watery p*ss". The reason they created a beer that doesn't really taste of anything is so that it's the least offensive to the most number of people. If you think about it it's good economics, the more people you can get to drink it without noticing a "bad" taste the more beers you sell. Blandness = ££'s!
