the short answer is yes if you do a search there are several threads discussing this topic. I don't dabble in that technique myself so I cannot speak with authority on the subject.

Hi Jason yes youo can use them, I have 1 which I got off ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/HAGEN-ELITE-QUALI ... 2001r39825

I also use an electrim 75 which is a similar device which is fully submerged in my other FV but this was about £20 from my local HBS
keg 1 : (Drinking) : Amarillo extract brew
keg 2 : (Conditioning) : Summer Ale extract
keg 3 : (Conditioning) : Lightening extract Goldings only
keg 4 : (Conditioning) : Lightening etxract

FV1 : FV2 :
Bottled: Brewferm Diabolo, Brewferm frambois
next up: coppers stout:)

Putting the FV in a temperature controlled bath like in that link is a much better idea than putting the Aquarium thermometer in the FV in my oppinion. You risk infection by placing something in the FV and call me paranoid but I've seen nothing to state that aquarium thermometers are food grade plastic.

You're paranoid. Ok?

I use fish tank heaters inside my brews. I also have the flex hanging over the edge of the FV and so the id isn't snapped on tight all round. And I'm drinking a pint of my own beer as I type this. I'm in heaven!

FWIW

I use a fish tank heater (Tetra 25watt) in my FV I have a small rubber grommet thru which I thread the flex, this set up has stood up well to 10 brews so far...

I can see the fv in a bath system working - however would this work for FV's with a tap fitted?

Unless someone tells me otherwise I'm not happy with submerging a vessel with a tap in water....

At least I soon notice if my FV's tap leaks...

I would think that fish tak heaters are identical to the electrim 75 available... in fact I'd bet good money they are both made in the same factory in Poland...

I would imagine that fish are more sensitive to possible contaminants than myself and my druken mates bellies are....

As long as you select a good quality one that meets all the relevant (electrical) safety standards etc. I'd give one a go if you find they are any cheaper than an electrim 'home brew' one..

Slainte!
