Sparkling Water for homebrew

Post by kaddy » Sun Jan 17, 2010 11:58 am

Hi Chaps,

I'm buying a load of sparkling water for the bottles to store my beer in. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience in using the sparkling water for their brew? I'm a little concerned about pH, but I expect the malt to correct that - any thoughts?

I will be brewing a Milestone bitter kit.

Cheers

personally i wouldn't as carbon dioxide is fairly acidic and though that isn't a problem for the yeast as the carbonation builds up during the fermentation i don't think it would be great for a yeast that hadn't yet got going. I'd say just drink the sparkling water and use normal tap water for the beer, tap water isn't a problem for kit beers.

Tesco Value still water comes in the same PET bottles as the fizzy water. I use the water to brew and then the bottles to bottle.

Ah brilliant I didn't know that about the Still water.

I'm still interested to know if anyone has tried carbonated water, could it increase the carbonation of the beer?

no, it's not a good idea. If it were, there would be a process invented to use carbonated water already. As suggested, the pH would be utterly wrong for the whole process.....

Stick to still :)
